Diet for Higher Consciousness

Namaskar dear friends. Today I am very happy to introduce my colleague. His name is Dada Shiilabhadránanda. And he is a yoga teacher and monk and sannyasi and he is a practitioner for how many Dadaji? I’ve practiced for 43 years now. 43 years of meditation. He is an inspiring figure. I always look up to him for advice and inspiration and today he has agreed that he will introduce in our platform of meditation steps. He will introduce the concept of yogic diet. In general you can say that yogis, meditators, we try to follow vegetarian diet. But vegetarianism is a very vague term. There are many kinds of vegetarianism and we follow sattvic diet or sentient diet. Which means the diet most suitable for development of consciousness, for spiritual elevation, for sharpness of the mind and for physical fitness. So I would like him to introduce step by step, all the ideas regarding food regarding the preparation of food consumption of food. And the effect of food order on the body and mind. By the way he has written a book It is a very clear scientific presentation of this sattvic diet. That book is called Diet for health and a higher consciousness. So I think he is a very good figure to present these ideas. I will give the stage to him and yes welcome to this new level of food for higher consciousness. Namaskar Today I’d like to talk about food or more specifically diet, as related to how it can help us for our meditation practice. According to yogic philosophy, this entire creation is the result of the interplay between that Cosmic being or Consciousness and its own intrinsic creative principles. These three creative principles for easier to remember, three forces of nature, can be described according to their effect of their qualification on everything in nature. Let me try to give concrete examples. The first energy expression of this principle is what we call sentient energy. Sentient means that which brings lightness, joy, peace to the mind. The [second] energy principle or creative principle is mutative. Restlessness, activity, constant movement. And the third of these three forces is static. As the word implies static is bringing decay, darkness and ignorance. So these three energies exist in everything. In ourselves, in nature and also of course in the food that we eat. So Yogis who have experimented, you know, in those ancient days. There were no cell phones to send text messages, no jet travel. They didn’t have so many time bound activities. They experimented on their bodies and minds. And also on the food that they ate. And so they were able to categorize foods according to the predominance of one of these three energies within that particular food item. And so this is how the yoga concept of diet has evolved. In our body we have 73 trillion cells. Some of them last for as long as one year and some as short as four hours. An average a cell will last for 21 days. And cells are actually composed of the food which we eat. That’s why you’ve heard the common
phrase, “You are what you eat”. So every single biochemical activity of the body is performed by cells having different functions in different places of our body. So it is very important when we talk about holistic well-being, mental development, that the food which we eat is carefully selected. And so this is why in the yogic system, the diet is based upon its effect. Primarily mentally and secondarily physically. So let us come to some examples of these three food categories. The first category is sentient. Examples of this food; (they are foods which are good for body and for mind). Grains, all of our grains such as rice, wheat, corn, milk products, nuts, seeds, legumes, all of our beans, spices, most spices and natural sweeteners, honey, raw sugar etc. The second category we call mutatative, that brings restlessness. May be good for body, may or may not be good for mind. Carbonated drinks, coffee, tea, chocolate and certain strong spices. Third category of food – static, which is not good for mind, may or may not be good for body, but not for mind. Brings that static flow in the mind, laziness. And it actually may activate lower instincts of mind. So meat, fish, eggs. And because of their heating qualities in the lower levels of the of the body; onions garlic and mushrooms. So these three principle, these energy principles. You may understand them more easily with the analogy of a flower. When a flower is growing, the plant is growing, it’s in the process of developing. It’s dominated by that movement, that activity, we say the mutative energy. And when the plant manifests its beauty in the form of the fruit or the flower, then it is dominated by this sentient, that brings joy or happiness or relief to those who who see that beautiful flower. And with time the flower decay sets in the petals wither, the flower loses its’ luster, its beauty. And that is the predominance of the static principle in that plant. So in this way we may understand even ourselves. For example when we are trying to wake up from the bed. We want to sleep longer, we’re very
much dominated by static energy at that moment. In the middle of the day, we’re moving so fast, we can early sit down and compose ourselves, because that time of the day our energy levels are very high. Evening comes, the beautiful sunset, twilight and go for a walk on the beach, we’re dominated by that sentient energy that brings joy and peace in the mind. So these are the three categories of food. But as the yogic science is very practical, there are certain other modifications to these categories. For example, in a cold climate, where the weather is extremely cold. Then the category of rajasika, the mutative category, second category. Those foods would not be considered anymore affecting restlessness in the mind, because they give a warmth to the body at that time. Also the quantity of food, even a so-called sentient categorised
food; if we eat too much of it, it will not have good effect on mind and body. And third is the preparation. The person who prepares the food, they’re leaving their own mental imprint in the food which they are preparing. So it’s best. You know the the famous phrase of olden days that the best food is mothers food. Because of the love that she put into the food feeding her family. So when we are able to take that kind of food which is from pure minded people, it definitely has a very beneficial effect on the mind. It reminds me of a story when I was a new monk, new yoga teacher and I had been invited to dinner at the home of one of our members. He wanted to learn meditation, so I arrived and I started to teach him some of the meditation practice and the yoga exercises. And the wife immediately went into the kitchen. She was so much eager to serve me some delicious food. So after two hours of our practices we came to the dinner and she sat us down and I mean it was like an ambrosial heaven. Seeing that the scents coming from the from the dishes and she began to serve me with so much love and affection and the food was so beautifully assimilated in my body. Next morning, early morning, the brother whom I taught meditation was so keen to meditate with me, we got up early, but I had such a nice feeling in my stomach and in my mind from the previous evenings dinner. So this is a very wonderful example I had about the effect of how food can affect our mind by someone who cooks it with love and sincerity. Another benefit of the vegetarian diet, the sentient vegetarian diet as I mentioned earlier the effect of food on the cells of the body. Each cell is made up of food from which we eat. So when we’re eating this type of sentient food, the cells emanate their own radiance, thier only effulgence. That’s why you’ve seen halos around the pictures of saints or great spiritual teachers. Because their food and also their minds, through meditation, creates this holy orders this subtle vibration, which we see in the form of those photos or sketches of great teachers. So throughout history if we look at the examples of vegetarians. we may find the greatest intellectual, moral, spiritual teachers followed vegetarian diet. Whether it was Sir Isaac Newton, Einstein, Gandhi, Buddha, Plato, Socrates, Benjamin Franklin. There’s a whole list of famous people not only famous but renowned for either of these three qualities; moral, intellectual or spiritual. That can give some credence to the value of the vegetarian diet when it comes to its effect mentally and spiritually. So not many studies have been done so far about the effects of vegetarian diet. But one out of Arizona State University showed that there’s a general perception that vegetarians are more gentle, more compassionate, more considerate than meat-eaters. It’s such a subjective thing but somehow the perceptions are there with rating vegetarians with non vegetarians. And through practice you will
see that the diet, the sattvic or the sentient diet of the the yogic way of life, will increase your desire to meditate. And it will open your appreciation for subtle music, subtle art and subtle dance. And you will slowly and gradually begin to feel the joy of how food, properly selected, will enhance every aspect of your outlook on life. and make you more mentally and spiritually developed. Thank you very much.

  1. Beautiful, I filled my heart with love by providing this information in such humble, graceful and authentic manner. It was peaceful to listen to you. 🙂

  2. Buddha forbade killing animals, rearing animals for meat and even selling of meat. So if someone says that meat eating is okay then he is certainly partaking a food prepared in a way that goes against the teachings of Lord Buddha. More over there have been an immense number of Buddhas in the past other than Gauthama Buddha and all of them had life spans of 20 000 years to 80 000 years. And it is said In CHakkavatthi Sihanada Sutta that if a single person in a society engages in killing sentient beings the life span of humans would not increase to such a level. So even if Gauthama Buddha consumed meat no other Buddha did! But No Gauthama Buddha did not consume it either because a Buddha never breaks a tradition of other Buddhas.

  3. So many dumb vegans in the comment section. Milk has been a big part of Indian culture, they worship the cow because it has sustained them for thousands of years in times of famine and raw grass fed milk cured my gut problems, you vegans are full of shit

  4. Пожалуйста поработайте над своим произношением ,сейчас у вас монах звучит как обузьянка.

  5. I fully endorse the statement that satvik diet can positively influence spiritual development. But I am not convinced meat eaters are not compassionate. I have seen many meat eaters as much loving and compassionate if not more than some vegetarians who kill fellow humans to protect cows. As guruji has pointed out the subjectivity of Arizona university study, I wonder how such studies can be called scientific. Yes, let us promote vegan diet without having to judge others who may prefer non-vegan.

  6. Hey! Thanks for the video!
I really want to like this, it feels super healthy and emotionally good. My problem is that I have some severe ibs problems, which means that I can't handle complex carbohydrates without tremendous stomach pain. I've been doing the keto diet for a while, with mostly meats and fats. I've been feeling good with no pain, but I still don't feel like this is the best diet.

Do you have any suggestions? Do you know people with similar problems etc?

    Thanks!

  7. Thank you for the information……plz tell me that, the fried vegetables are coming undr satvik foog or not. What is the actual position of onion, garlic and other milk products?

  8. You mention milk products, do you know how milk extraction is done in most parts of the world???? You should find out, TORTURE, KILLING OF CALVES, INSANE.
Explain how a product coming from so much torture and pain can have a satvic effect in body and mind, where is Ahimsa then, and Saucha, when this products are full of chemicals( most milk comes from farm factories) and Asteya??? when your are stealing milk that belong to a calve that has been killed so you can have it. Dairy products where ingested in India thousand of years ago and for this Yogis the cows where sacred, not the case in this times.
Dairy products also are scientifically proven to be detrimental to health.

  9. Is not consciousness stay untouched by what happened in body of meat or in body of mind?
Then what is higher consciousness? Is there possibility to play with consciousness rising it high and dropping it low or keeping it at the middle? If so I wondering to know WHO are capable to play with consciousness?
Your use of term consciousness is too loose and somehow similar to abused and badly corrupted term soul in western beliefs. People believes there is somebody else inside of themselves called soul which can have even its own sex, its own past and its own future beside of host body which this parasite sits in. They also desperately chasing for cleaning soul from so-called sins and so on.
Is not the sentence "I have soul" is equal to "I have consciousness"?
If so, there is no hope to dismiss it just by diet, don't fool yourself and others 😉

  10. Намаскар, Дада. Почему ты не знакомишь русскоязычную аудиторию, с такими интересными, продвинутыми людьми?

  11. Ahimsa will lead you to vegan diet. It's the only way nowadays due to unethical tratment of animals in the food industry. we live in 2019 and not year 500 hundred.

  12. My kundalini is awakened so im very sensitive too food that is not satvvic , if I eat it then I feel instantly depressed and exhausted, but when I eat satvic foods I feel so much better , although I feel I still need to eat meat – but no cow or fish only meat that is free range organically humanly treated without suffering imprints. Eating animal flesh makes me feel so sick ,Id like to give it up but I feel I cant right now because I start to feel ill. I dont even enjoy eating anymore it only drags down my vibrational state and internal bliss and peace and i fast everday. I hope one day soon I will be able to thrive simply by absorbing energy from the sun.

  13. Anyone else expect that dude to speak in an Indian accent until he spoke and sounded like a product of suburbia

  14. don't become vegetarian, vegan or raw foodist just because you've heard that these diets have a higher vibration. focus on increasing your vibration from the inside-out through practicing more awareness and a forgiving, loving attitude towards yourself. that in and of itself will help you be more and more nourished on a purely energetic level (without food). then the transition to lighter diets will happen automatically and intuitively. if you force yourself to these ways of eating before you're ready (most people still require meat because their energy/consciousness is in a denser place) in hopes to reach higher consciousness you'll sooner or later run into deficiencies. I've been on both ends of the spectrum (two years vegan, 2-3 months carnivore) and I can tell you; your diet is mostly a REFLECTION of your energy, not the cause of it. like I said before, if you're in the process of raising your consciousness and cleaning your emotional body, changing your diet comes naturally and will simply be of support for your shift in consciousness and not the leading cause of it.

  15. Thank you for this wonderful, gentle talk and encouragement to consume Sattvic diet. Likewise helpful to consume sattvic mental diet also. 😊

  16. I'm very interesting in this type of diet for my spiritual journey? ??????? Where do I get my b12 vitamins? Tks

  17. hmm. seems science has evolved since then. I wonder if there's anything we can glean from their notions, ..but sounds doubtful..

  18. We are really less conscious of our quality of diets and indiscriminately eat whatever is palatable to our tastes. Vegetarianism is definitely very suitable for our holistic health and evolution. Swamiji is a great monk and health expert. We have learned many lessons from his teaching.

  19. In the Essene Gospel of Peace..Jesus states that the milk of all the animals is for us as well as all vegetarian foods. We must first allow the calf,,etc to get it's fill before taking. That requires a Vedic farm. Not easy. Do your best and bless it all. Certified Humane is rare.

  20. I didn't believe any of this when I first heard about it, but on second thought decided that Indian people are definitely not stupid and I should have more respect for thousands of years of experience! So I tried it. After two years of sitting zen in Japan, I could really tell the difference in my body and mind! Wow! For the better! If you want a smoother, happier mind and life avoid these black foods: all foods in the garlic and onion family, all foods in the nightshade family: potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, red, green, and yellow peppers, chilis, all meats and fish- everything in the animal kingdom. And if you are practicing any type of tantra, avoid vegetables that grew below the ground. Try this out one by one, for yourself, and you will be surprised at how different the texture of your mind becomes. The kinds of thoughts and energy that flows thru you will really change a lot. We have economic and kindness reasons for avoiding meat, but from the meditators view, you are eating pure terror when you eat animal products. They died a violent death to feed you. Is that non-harming? Dairy is a question. Since in India it came from cows naturally, yogis did take it, but here in the west, so much violence is done to cows to get dairy products that you may want to avoid that. It's up to you. I was really most surprised by how adding onion and garlic to my diet, after years in India without them, immediately increased raging sexual desire. It's so useless, why feed it? My stomach and body just did not want them at all and made that known very quickly! Experiment for yourself, like I did. See what happens. Be very sensitive to your own energy flow and the type of thoughts that arise. PS: it takes a few days to get stuff out of your system.

  21. We respect your beliefs and understand your not ready to accept ours but we hope you see the truth soon. We become what we eat and absorb energy from food not just "nutirents". The animals that you kill to eat experience suffering and trauma, that maybe on different levels depending on whether they live in unnatural conditions or naturally ones. But when they finally have their life taken they do experience suffering. And so you are consuming death and suffering so you will become death and suffering. And as result of taking a life, life will be taken from you.

  22. If I drank cow's milk, I would not be following nature's way. It is for the baby cow. Also, milk is for raising young offspring where the young one's digestive system has not adapted to other food. Lactation creates milk and Pregnancy creates lactation. Lactation only lasts a few years because that is nature's design. The highest path is one of least resistance. It is the peaceful path that is attuned with nature. Their is a proper way and because someone said it thousands of years ago, wrote it down and was passed generation to generation does not make it proper by nature's design. Just think about it, experiment on your own, find the truth. In time you will find that the works passed on by many were full of truths mixed in with unrealized lies that seemed true to the inexperienced.

  23. Did he just say milk is good? Majority of cows are handled not so positively when being milked. Not even considering that calves are being taken away from mother. That energy can surely not be positive.

  24. This is way off in a lot of ways. Lions mane mushrooms literally turns your awareness and brain function way up, and all dairy brings your awareness and consciousness waaaay down not to mention causes excess of mucus in the body. We don’t live in ancient times anymore our knowledge is much better as we have been evolving and awakening. Go from your own heart. Don’t listen to anyone. Not even me. Inquire deeply within yourselves and find out for your own.

  25. Newton, Einstain, Gandhi, Buddah… Hitler…. XD I'm kiddin'… I really appreciate your channel and your contents but to be honest this topic for me is the least convincing, I mean: for meat and fish I got the point (being vegetarian myself), but garlic, onions, eggs (organic)… nutrition seems to me quite a subjective topic and also strongly defined in its qualities by the way a certain product is grown and harvested…anyway I'll consider seriously your point and check out myself.

  26. I know it is so important in today's world to eat right and not over do it. I find life works best if you simply eat like your distant ancestors during evolution and from their region of the world. Eat close to the earth as possible. Nothing processed. Natural meat, fish, seasonal fruits, berries and nuts, local flora, tons of brocolli. Don't eat every meal and in fact, fast for a 24 hour period weekly. Fasting allows for natural cellular autophagy for a healthy body, and eating like we're always hungry, inhibits that process. Experts, smechsperts. Besides, every true practitioner of the deepest of spiritual arts knows to drink organic chai tea and you'll talk to the cosmos. Oops. Add in the LSD

  27. Out of 55000 something mammals, Indian tradition has texts saying 5-6 mammals are such whose milk is good for human consumption.. they include cow, camel, goat, donkey, buffalo etc. These are the animals which were allowed to be within the household boundaries (like family members) unlike dogs/cats which were fed outside the house. Out of cow and other mammals, it is cow whose milk can be given to goat or buffalo etc for treatment. Milking the cow is termed "dohan" which comes from "do" meaning "two". Thus only two udders are milked and rest two are left for calf.

  28. Hello, thank you for your wisdom
I want to become a sanyasi, can you please advise for a place to come and be established in yogic life? Thank you.🙏

  29. LMAOROTMFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diet for Higher Consciousness… yeah, right!
What about the THOUSANDS of rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and insects killed every year so you can have your soy, your wheat, and your corn??? Not to mention all of the bigger animals which end up dying terrifying deaths for eating the rodents and frogs that get poisoned by the mono-crop industry! Would that be "seen as violating any rules and regulation of nature"???

  30. I can believe this … because when I was eating a plant based diet I was more calm and easy going …. I have to get back to that lifestyle

  31. Would be much better to spend time videoing how to discover extremely powerful mindfulness and meditation techniques that actually bring about rare cases of authentic enlightenment

  32. Dairy is terrible for you regardless of ahimsa. It is full of estrogen because the mommy cow needs that as a biological signal to produce milk. This hormone also signals the calf to grow bigger. Humans will become disbalanced eating cows milk because of that. The first rule of ayurveda is we examine the current condition of the being. If the being is not lacking in estrogen then we should not add excess estrogen via milk – simple as that. Also it is full of animal fat which we are not designed to eat so much of outside of early age when body is full of stem cells and is in a different mode altogether and also requires hormone triggers to grow. In maturity milk addition to the body increases growth of cancer and causes heart disease and related conditions via higher cholesterol and clogging of arteries and gain of adipose tissue.

  33. eat a diet that is congruent with excellent health. research scientific studies on both sides. experiment. find out what makes you feel best and thrive. you know your body best

  34. Such a beautiful person. We have to understand where is sbd coming from, the background, the age, the society/environment he grew up and take all factors into account, before we judge. If we go back in time we will see some Greek philosophers who were consuming dairy too, which for their level of consciousness and mental state it was ok, but this doesn't mean that this is the optimum, the most right thing or the most efficient for the body. In my opinion, not harming/exploiting any form of life is the ideal, since it is not a matter of survival. Everybody is in a different stage, I think we have to be open to progress without rejecting.

  35. when consuming animal dna you consume their imbalanced hormones, emotional traumas, low vibrational energy (due to their handling, slavery and being overworked till they drop), as well as injected antibiotics, parasites, bacteria, etc.

  36. Your wrong… grass fed meat is the way to go… has everything thing you need… head to toe… you have been programmed and deceived… I’m sorry

  37. Thankyou Thank you Thank you so much for your time and caring powerfully world heaven on earth blessed world caring world from Kenya love silence breathe beautiful beautiful beautiful

  38. Update on my Facebook 'cody kamrath' I'm living in a higher level of being I'm become how I really am everyone I'm sending joy and peace be with the people and let your kids be how they really are

  39. Please pray I stop eating meat. And stop drinking decaf coffee and drinking milk. It’s very mentally painful cause I go through all these pains and feel the animals pain and makes me suffer. I suffer daily. Pray I quit smoking cigarettes too please.

  40. Thank you swamiji….also our bodies are not designed by nature to digest meat… another point, in our modern lives ,we store food in the fridge for long periods of time … even SATTVIK (sentient) food kept too long in the fridge becomes TAMASIK (degenerative).

  41. The bottom line: It's difficult to grow and nurture your soul if you can't feel and recognize the horrendous treatment of these gentle sentient creatures. They endure the unimaginable in mass numbers, and if you turn away from evil you're part of it.

  42. The Buddha himself ate meat, and was an enlightened master. Pretty much ALL of the great yogis from Tibet ate meat, it's pretty hard being vegetarian in Tibet given the cold climate there. The Dalai Lama isn't a vegetarian as far as I know.

At minimum I would recommend a flexitarian diet, where a person eats 90-95% plant based. This whole puritanical idea of needing to be vegetarian imo is unnecessary for health or the dharma.

I myself don't eat meat, but I do like to drink a moderate amount of beer / wine (2 servings) regularly. If you do eat meat, try your best to obtain it from humane certified sources.

  43. Such a wonderful and truthful commentary on the benefits of eating a sattvic diet. It is such a shame that the universal ego seems to have hijacked the comment section with its erroneous and judgmental view of dairy consumption. O well.

  44. Hello I just want to ask that why do you consider eggs as not good for mind when from many scientific approval frequent consumption of eggs actually has many significant health benefits including mind function aswell
