How to Overcome Adrenal Fatigue | Dr. Josh Axe

Hey guys, Dr. Axe here, Doctor of Functional
Medicine and Nutritionist. Today I’m going to talk about how to overcome adrenal fatigue.
And so many people today struggle with adrenal insufficiency, major fatigue issues, and it’s
due to problems with the adrenal glands. And the adrenal glands are two sort of thumb-sized
organs that sit here in the back of your flank area, and there are so many people, I would
say about 80% of the population that at some point will struggle with adrenal fatigue at
some point in their life. And in this video I’m going to go through
the three steps you must follow if you want to heal adrenal fatigue for good. And really
it starts with diet. Actually, before I get into that though, let me talk about warning
signs you have adrenal fatigue. Number one, if you struggle with fatigue,
even if you get enough sleep at night and the next day you wake up and you’re still
tired, that is a major warning sign you have adrenal fatigue. If you feel like you can
just never catch up or you’re always tired, that’s a warning sign you have adrenal fatigue. If you feel overwhelmed and stressed, you
feel anxiety, those are warning signs you have adrenal fatigue. If you have trouble
focusing or concentrating or poor memory, those are warning signs you have adrenal fatigue
or adrenal insufficiency. Also, if you have a thyroid issue, pretty
much every person that has a thyroid condition, whether it’s hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s or
Graves’ disease, any of those issues, that probably means you do have an adrenal issue. And some other warning signs could be that
you are storing excess body fat. So if you have gone to the gym and you’ve worked out
for hours, and you’re still not losing weight like you think you should. Or you can’t seem
to lose that last five pounds or break through that weight loss plateau, those are warning
signs that you have adrenal fatigue. And so step number one in healing adrenal
fatigue is changing your diet. The top foods you must get out of your diet to heal your
adrenal glands is number one, caffeine. If you’re consuming loads and loads of coffee
on a regular basis and large amounts of caffeine, that will definitely burn out your adrenal
glands. The other thing is consuming too much sugar.
Sugar will burn out your adrenal glands. Hydrogenated oils in foods that are just stimulants, like
I’ve already mentioned, foods that really imbalance blood sugar levels and will cause
spikes. But caffeine and sugar are the two biggies that you need to get out of your diet. Now, the next thing here are the foods that
really support your adrenal glands. And foods that are high in Vitamin B-12 and magnesium,
also foods that help stabilize blood sugar and energy levels. Coconut products, like coconut oil, coconut
milk, coconut meat, those are great for supporting your adrenal glands. Olives are great, olives
and olive oil. Raw dairy products and grass-fed butter are fantastic, organic meats. Doing
loads of vegetables, especially spinach, kale, and chard are great for the adrenal glands. Also, seaweed. Seaweed contains iodine along
with other minerals that can support the adrenal glands as well. And so, again, adding some
of those foods in your diet is a definite must in changing your diet if you want to
overcome adrenal fatigue. Now, the second thing you need to do to heal
adrenal fatigue is take supplements that support your adrenal glands, and there is a group
of herbs or roots called adaptogen or adaptogenic herbs which include a family of things, like
ashwagandha, rhodiola, Holy Basil, licorice root and ginseng. But adaptogen herbs are titled adaptogens
because they help your body adapt and deal with stress, and these have big benefits. The number one you want to take, the number
one adaptogen for specifically your adrenals and your thyroid is called ashwagandha. So
you want to take ashwagandha, Holy Basil, and licorice root. I believe are the most
beneficial for supporting your adrenal glands. Also, getting B Vitamins is very important
for your adrenal glands, especially Vitamin B-12. But I recommend taking a high quality
B Vitamin complex supplement. And last but not least, magnesium, as well
as Vitamin D can also support your adrenals and selenium. Selenium is a mineral that works
as an antioxidant that also supports the adrenal glands. So those are the most important nutrients
to support your adrenals in terms of the supplements. And last but not least, if you want to overcome
adrenal fatigue is you’ve got to lower your overall stress levels. Step number one in lowering stress is getting
better quality sleep at night, sleeping 8 to 10 hours a night. The next step is if you are stressed out,
you’ve got to start working on removing the stressors. And I recommend you get out a sheet
of paper, write down all of those things that are causing stress. Maybe it’s your boss at
work. Maybe it’s your spouse doing something. Maybe it’s something in your schedule. Really look and address and know what’s stressing
you out, and then work on rectifying those things. And you can’t fix all forms of stress,
but if you can reduce, let’s say, reduce your stress by 50%, that alone will help you improve
your adrenal function and help heal your adrenal glands. And then schedule in times of fun and joy
in your schedule doing things you love to do, that also can help you overcome adrenal
insufficiency. So, again, getting more sleep, reducing stress, adding joy into your life.
All of those things are going to help you overcome adrenal fatigue. And also doing certain forms of exercise that
help reduce stress, like barre classes, Pilates, even going out for a jog. Whatever exercise
for you, not overdoing it but just light amounts of exercise 20 to 30 minutes several times
a week. Going out, going for a walk, going out in
nature. All of those things that can reduce stress are going to help you overcome adrenal
fatigue. So remember, if you want to heal adrenal fatigue
or cure your adrenal fatigue fast, what I recommend you do, number one, change your
diet. Get rid of the caffeine and sugar. Start loading up on those nutrient dense foods,
especially green leafy vegetables and healthy fats, like coconut oil. Number two, take some good quality supplements,
like ashwagandha and other adaptogenic herbs. Also B Vitamins, and last but not least, reduce
stress. You follow those three steps, you are well on your way to curing your adrenal
fatigue symptoms. Hey guys, this has been Dr. Axe with natural
steps to heal adrenal fatigue.

  1. Are any of the recommended products FDA approved? Sick of wasting money on 'natural' or homeopathic products that don't work.

  2. Excellent video, thank you so much!!! I've recommended adaptogens to my clients and used it myself during stressful times with a LOT of success. Ashwagandha and Holy Basil being my favorite! Australia is low in selenium… Thanks again. So useful

  3. I feel like all of the symptoms fit my experience, except that I have a hard time gaining weight. What might this indicate? Also, does the caffeine in green tea and black tea have the same effect as coffee?

  4. Always check yourself for candida. This is a fungus that overgrows due to bad stress and eating too many bad foods like sugar, dairy and white starchy foods. Many say the use of too many antibiotics and even cancer drugs add greatly to this as they kill off too much good bacteria in our gut. Gut bacteria is needed for a healthy immune system preventing us from bad illnesses.

I had terrible fatigue, bad depression and anxiety caused by chronic candida for many years.

Symptoms are:  24 hr fatigue, depression, anxiety, white coating on the tongue, acne, skin rashes, intolerance to dairy or gluten, athletes foot, insomnia, sinus problems and headaches, cravings for sugar, dairy and bread, bad breath. Many people can turn into alcoholics because of the sugar cravings and bad depression along with chronic fatigue.

To test yourself type in candida spit test on youtube. If you have this, type in candida and look for a picture with 2 tongues on it. I posted a diet plan along with antifungals i took to kill mine, under Eifion Phillips.

    Bye all.

  5. I eat 400grams of carbs a day. I do bodybuilding. But i dont eat sugars.. I take the supplements and eat grass fed butter.. I also eat half a kilo of veggys a day. i try to sleep at 11pm and and wake up at 8am. I do daily walks outside.. but still i wake up every one and a half hours at night.. what wrong with me? I also have very big brainfrog and am constantly thinking.. i dont drink coffee. And I dont have lots of stress

  6. I don't eat carbs anyway, consuming fats and raw food only (cuz can't feel alive eating dead food)
But 8-10 hours? For real? I feel like I'm oversleeping my life… 10hours is just too much…Used to need only 5-6 hours sleep after doing a detox and parasite cleanse, but I messed up with my diet. Now I redoing the detox, let's pray that I'll be back at 5/6hours soon….

  7. Can getting up from laying in bed too fast and feeling dizzy when you’re standing be a sign of adrenal fatigue as well?

  8. Hi I read that if you drink coffee in the mornings only you can get a tolerance to it.
But it also said be sure not to do it by half measure it’s all or nothing so you become tolerant.

  9. I don't drink coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, juice, multivitamins, cigarette, alcohol and I eat only once a day and almost anything and I am 40 and feel like early 30s

  10. Also, alcohol is a real adrenal killer playing havoc with adrenal spikes, being pure sugar. Must be minimized or cut our entirely — particularly when coffee is taken as the antidote to a hangover, which is even worse.

  11. Truth: Diet, Sleep, Exercise & Stress level effect Adrenal Glands. I healed my body of adrenal fatigue in 2016 by eating protein, veggies, gluten free, low carb & Alkaline Water, workout 4-5x per week + 7 hours of sleep at night. After a stressful event in summer 2018, I started to have insomnia & sleep deprivation which led to poor diet (low cal but not always gluten free) & adrenal fatigue came back (Chronic Fatigue-zombie state/brain fog). I still work out 4-5x per week. Going on 1 week detox & alkaline water fast, then back to gluten & sugar free diet and 7 hours of sleep at night & YOGA

  12. I've tried Ashwaganda for few days and it caused me face and body swelling or puffiness..has anyone else suffer the same?

  13. Hi, is it necessary to cut out caffeine completely? I just love the taste and I drink just a small cup of espresso. Is this already too much? Also, I hate taking supplements, I believe in receiving beneficial nutrients straight from natural and unprocessed sources. So how can I support my adrenals without having to purchase all these different supplements you mention?

  14. is it 'Safe' to take along with SNRI's etc.? Please always keep that in mind? I've found my SNRI medication helps allot with keeping me Positive, Anti-Depressant /shrug, but none do F-all for Anxiety. I need something that is Quick Acting & Safe along side SNRI's etc.. I don't trust the likes of ASHWAGANDHA, Rhodiola etc. to not negatively interact with these Serotonin medications…

  15. How do you know if you have got onto the insulin resistant phase I think I have does it make you feel a bit puffy and tired so don’t feel stressed I just feel puffy and tired

  16. Feel too tired to even watch this video! However, Dr Axe is so wonderful I'm hanging on. He's got such great energy. Love him!

  17. Can you take holy basil at night and ashwagandha in the morning? Can I add any other things like lithium orotate? 5htp? What about dopamine or gaba inhibitors? I'm trying to find supplements I can tolerate and not have scary contraindications.

  18. Absolutely agree with this. The only thing I would dispute is ashadawanga for hashimoto's.
It's important to address adrenal fatigue before you end up in the hospital. Take time off and heal your body. It's vital to repair adrenals before you are completely burnt out and need. Once your adrenals burn out you will need at least a year to recover.

  19. Please help me…all they do for me is giving me blood work but don't nothing else. Changed diet over year ago. Please…💔

  20. Where can I find (and which brand to trust) for supplements recommend in this video? And for me, they must be gluten free. Thanks.

  21. Hope this cures my LUPUS. I have been on 20mg of prednisone since November. Will start to taper off now. Hope these remedies keep the pain away.

  22. Quality Video!! Man I appreciate Dr Axe so much and his co worker Solid Info and absolutely love this channel!

  23. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, focusing on nutritious vegetables and dark leafy greens, non-strenuous exercise (walking), teaching myself to let go of things I can't control, and definitely more sleep helped me. I also had some blood tests done to identify nutritional deficiencies, eliminated any foods that didn't add something beneficial to my body and added more foods that were beneficial. 🙂

  24. Gave up the coffee. 2 days of hell. And now I feel phenomenal. Won't ever ever go back to caffeine again.

  25. I'm not 100% sure but I think I've been struggling with this all my life ever since I was a kid I'm going to go to the doctor and find out cuz there's too many symptoms that I've been listening to and to think that that sounds just like me sort of the only thing I don't really have a weight problem

  26. Western medicine is a joke and has killed more people than everything combined. Instead of healing or correcting they treat which masks the symptoms until they turn to something worse. Unfortunately the holistic drs end up murdered…. hmmmm wonder why? Maybe do a little research and youll find out they are allowed to keep you sick. They only fix trauma like broken bones etc… they cure nothing. Shame

  27. I can’t get out of bed. I need to remove my stressors. I take a lot of the things he recommends, I am going quick fix with hydrocortisone injections. THEN, I can actually give a chance to this man’s recommendations.

  28. B vitamins – natural form is in nutritional yeast. Eat at least 3 teaspoons a day. With pecan will make a nice flavour. Its good by itself, unless you eat sugar and we know after sugar everything has no taste. Take B12 for energy and nervous system, nutritional yeast has no B12. Without enough potassium, everything is lost. You need 4 to 5 gr a day from foods. Avocados, bananas, kale, potatos. Potassium with hymalaian salt do wonders.

  29. Great video doctor. This helped me understand my adrenaline fatigue better and how I can help reduce it.

  30. How is a normal every day person supposed to afford all this stuff dr axe I can barely afford the bone broth collagen you send me every month ….🤔

  31. Ashwagandha works 100%. first time i took high dose and waiting for it to work same day then left becuz didnt feel anything. Now i just take a high dose everyday and its working great . shocked!!! Big difference. Nothing else has worked and with Ashwagandha wanted to feel it same day after high dose. Stick to it and forget about waiting for it to work then u will see a BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!! Dont take anything else. u stressing ur self. stick to just Ashwagandha everyday and it will work MORE

  32. I wondered why since getting married and trying to conceive I have gained so much weight (chin/belly/arms/thighs). Before then I was on a daily supplement regimen that included super b complex. I thought that taking prenatal vitamins that included the same nutrients would make me sick or would cause some other adverse effects. Instead, should I continue with these? I previously did not have a thyroid issue, or weight issue – to this extreme.

  33. I have had a lot of the warning signs of adrenal fatigue for sometime.
Went to my doctor last week, asked to take a test to find out for sure. He told me there is no such thing as adrenal fatigue.
So, I'm going to save-up, and get a home test and find out on my own.

  34. DR Josh..could you do a video on how to deal with chemical sensitivity. the other videos onlins seem to be a scam. i cannot be around any scented products and im reacting to all medications

  35. Dr Axe, I work nite shift and suffer from adrenal fatigue. I’m trying to quit smoking but my job is stressful plus raising our 2 grandkids. I’m 56 and just now “getting into” essential oils. Hair is thinning and can’t get rid of the belly fat. Suggestions? Thx so much. I love your videos😊

  37. Here’s a rule most doctors, nutritionists & gym ppl DON’T tell you, sweating at the gym, excessive cardio & lifting weights WILL NOT assist you in losing weight!

  38. Ask any endocrinologist, this is not a thing, adrenal insufficiency requires a diagnosis, adrenal fatigue is nothing more than normal modern world stress. Stop misinforming

  39. Sleep has been an issue for me and i know that its messing with my health, but how can i accomplish a nice good night sleep for 8 hours when i have a 20 month old who refuses to sleep? 😔

  40. I tell you ladies what: between him and Thomas DeLauer, I’ll do anything they say. “Sure honey. Whatever you tell me I need.” 🥰

  41. the symptoms you name could also indicate 100 other conditions because they are unspecific. thx for telling that clearly in the video. not!

  42. i have thyroid disease and I am 51 going through menopause. and I started taking ashwaganda 1 week ago. man what a difference! I have a lot of energy now and it solved all my menopause symptoms as well. Give it a try!

  43. Wish you the best.Jesus bless. Please everyone read the Gospel 1Corint 15:1-4,Rom 3:25, 10:9-10, & Ephes 2:8-9.
