Organic Junk Food – When “Organic” Isn’t Healthy


Hey guys this is Heather from HealthyEatingStartsHere.com.
Today I wanted to talk to you about organic junk foods. There are a lot of benefits to
organic food but a junk food even if it’s organic – not healthy. I was listening to an audio book recently
by Seth Godin and he was taking about being in a grocery store and looking at these supposed
natural type cookies and he was looking at them and kind of tempted because they look
pretty like the package was nice it had the kind of roll top that you used to see when
you was a kid but he thought about it for a minute and realize you know what they are
just unhealthy as most of these other cookies. And one thing he said really really stuck
with me and that is this. “They just make it easier to lie to yourself when you feed
them to your kids.” Which you know is a pretty – pretty harsh way to put it but
I like it. Its – it’s direct and to the point. So when I think of junk foods what I’m talking
about are processed foods mainly so things like chips, cookies, ice cream, pizza, soda
even cereal it got lot of sugar in it, I’ll consider that a junk food. If any of those things say organic, don’t
get fooled into thinking that’s healthy. Be sure to look at it and I always prefer
whole foods over processed but if you are going to take something, look at the ingredients
and make sure that there’s nothing crazy going on in there. And the same thing can be said about vegan
junk foods. They are a lot of foods that are vegan that are not healthy so I’m looking
at the fake meats, fake cheeses. They’re highly processed; got lots of soy in them,
TVP, the textured vegetable protein. You know the same things as junk foods, chips,
cookies, ice creams, if they don’t have dairy, milk, eggs, meat in them but they’re
still junk they’re not healthy. Even if they say vegan, even if they say organic,
don’t be fooled! I think, some of these things could be useful like the fake meats
and cheeses and stuff when you’re in a transition if its – if it help you overall to get you
to your goal in a healthy vegan diet I think that’s ok. And I know that not everyone can cut these
things out entirely but what I want you to be aware of is that you shouldn’t be fool
in thinking that they are healthy. They are a compromise and just they might help you
get to your long term goals but just don’t lie to yourself about them. Ok! They’re
not healthy! Now I wanna know what you guys think. Leave

  1. I love vegan junk food especially the fake meats and cheeses. It is really helping me transition from vegetarian to vegan (I am still not there though since there are so many products that i thought were vegan that actually have milk products in them). What would you recommend to substiture for the fake meats and cheeses that are healthier? These foods are just really convenient for me.

  2. I find that I really don't like the faux meats much anymore. Some are too similar to meat and others are really awful tasting. There seems to be no happy medium. So instead I go with beans,nuts and legumes to take the place of meat or faux meat.

  3. the only processed foods i use are Daiya cheese(i only use it on occasion though.. I use it as a treat like once a week). And sometimes when I'm making baked goods I use the fake butter and stuff like that. I also have a big thing with Triscuits and Tostitos. I know they're not healthy, but I do enjoy them on occasion as a treat or something.

  4. @thatkidevan I like the Daiya cheese too. But have you noticed, its been a few weeks since i've checked, the nutritional information on the package is sparse with nutritional value. It has calories and a whopping 1 gram of fiber but that's about it.

  5. I think there is a difference between "healthy' and "healhIER".. I know when I buy organic versions of junk food, it's because I'm GOING to buy chips or cookies regardless, but I am more likely to reach for the organic version when available.

  6. Vegan junk food is the reason why we have sick vegans. Sick vegans give plant-based diets a bad name. Health can only come from eating and living healthfully.

  7. I have to admit, I've tried vegan "organic" treats. Most of them are made with some type of dried fruit such as dates and occasionally some type of nuts. Also other ingredients such as whole grains/flours, evap. cane juice, etc. I suppose are not "healthy"? Suppose it's just best to not have "treats"?? Is there such a thing as healthy organic treats? What about the cookie recipes you offer on your site?

  8. for treats ill eat a bowl of organic chocolate cereal (by orgran) and organic popcorn, but i always try to stick to whole foods, i buy these vegan burgers made only with brown rice, sunflower kernals and veggies and spices and eat them when im really lazy with salad. if i want a faux meat dish ill use tempeh (tempeh meatballs are the best)

  9. why are you so obsessed with being healthy ? yeah it will benefit your body later in life but do you really wanna look back when your 80 saying wow i never ate mccdonals then you die and never get to taste food . food is something you should enjoy not get all scared about it

  10. @kimhil Honestly, I think the best tasting foods are healthy vegan foods. Once you transition to a healthier lifestyle, your tastebuds and preferences change. Also, once you start experiencing all the awesome benefits of doing basically what Heather says to do in her videos, you really don't want to go back to eating processed crap. At least that's how it is for me, others may feel differently. Personally, you couldn't pay me to eat at a place like McDonald's ever again.

  11. What are your thought's on daiya cheese? Its soy free and gluten free. Also there are a lot of vegan cookies out there that are vegan/gluten free and free of many other allergens. Do you think those are ok?

  13. @kimhil Who says that vegans or eating healthy is not enjoyable? You are assuming at least 2 things with your comment above: that everyone feels the same about McDonalds as you do and that everyone feels the same about eating healthy as you do. Didn't you know that assumption is the lowest form of knowledge. Eating healthy is enjoyable and it ensures that a person is more likely to reach the age of 80. McDonalds taste like crap and eating it leads to heart disease and many other ailments.

  14. I have to say that I am just realizing that organic and natural junkfood are still processed to a point. Now I'm working on making homemade "junkfood" at home (cookies, chicken nuggets, brownies, even potato chips from organic potatos, add sea salt and fry in organic safflower oil). Though I have to say, with 3 kids (I homeschool too), I LIVE in my kitchen, LOL! It feels so good to make your own, whelp, off to go and learn to make organic icecream!
