Put Down the Diet Soda! The Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners-Transformation TV-Episode #005

Hey, I’m Dr. Josh Axe and welcome to Transformation
TV. This week I’m going to be talking about artificial sweeteners which are some of the
most deadly compounds on the planet. You and your family want to stay completely away from
artificial sweeteners. Now, artificial sweeteners, most of the time
they came about accidentally, not even on purpose, but people found they had a sweet
texture and taste to them and actually the number one used sweetener of the past two
decades has been artificial sweetener known as aspartame. Aspartame first started being
used in diet coke and actually they saw, in 1981, when Diet Coke was introduced on the
market, brain tumors increased with it exponentially and so they rose in correlation with it and
that was just one big side effect. Now, another study down at the University
of Texas found that aspartame caused kidney damage and weight gain. Lots of you think,
“Well, I’m drinking a Diet Coke or a diet soda. Shouldn’t that cause my weight to decrease?”
Actually, at the University of Texas they found for every diet soda you drink, your
chance of weight gain goes up by 41%, and the reason is that these are toxic chemicals.
Toxins get stored in your fat cells if you’re drinking lots of diet soda. It’s going to
be stored in your cells and your body cannot burn fat and lose weight. So if you’re trying
to lose weight, kick the diet soda immediately. One of the most dangerous things and facts
to know about aspartame is what it breaks down into. Actually, aspartame breaks down
in your body into wood alcohol, formaldehyde, and ethanol which are toxic chemicals and
they’re known to be carcinogenic. They actually cause cancer, and that’s why you want to stay
away from these. There’s a great documentary out there called “Sweet Misery.” If you want
to get a whole DVD series on this, again you are going to want to go watch the DVD, “Sweet
Misery.” Another artificial sweetener that is shockingly
dangerous is Sucralose, and it’s found in a product called Splenda. A lot of people
think, “Well, Splenda, I thought that was a health food or I thought it came from sugar.”
Splenda started off coming from sugar, but they add a chlorine ion, a chlorine molecule
onto the sugar and so basically what happens, if you’re drinking Splenda or Sucralose, it’s
breaking down in your body as chlorine. I actually recently had a patient come into
my clinic and they told me about a friend of theirs who had just been hospitalized for
three days for chlorine poisoning, and the doctors told them it was from her using too
much Splenda. She was actually using cups of Splenda in her baking and sweetening and
actually found that it caused chlorine poisoning in her body. So if you are doing Splenda,
again, plan on or just know that it’s chlorine. It’s like drinking chlorinated water. It causes
cancer. You want to stay completely away from these artificial sweeteners. Now, places you’re going to want to look for
these artificial sweeteners and the names you’re going to be looking for, the top two
names to look for are Sucralose and aspartame. Now, if you ever use protein powders, you’ve
got to look in your protein powders for these. Number one, if you’re drinking a diet soda,
99% of the time it’s going to have Sucralose or Splenda in it. Even things like Crystal
Light and a lot of the different sweeteners out there, you’re going to find they have
these artificial sweeteners in them. You got to read your labels. You do not want
to bring in this stuff in. Honestly, I’d rather someone drink regular sugar than do artificial
sweeteners because they’re neurotoxins, they’re toxic chemicals. Here’s what you want to do instead. You want
to switch over to an all-natural sweetener, something like stevia. Now, this is personally
what I use, but stevia is an all-natural sweetener that comes from the herb of a flower and it’s
no calories, and so it’s not going to cause the added weight gain. So add a little bit
of stevia into things the like berry smoothies that I do. If I want to sweeten something up a little
bit, again, stevia is a great option, all natural. Some other things you can do, you
got to be careful of the sugar content, but raw honey, Grade B maple syrup and things
like coconut nectar are other good options and fruit, but that’s where I’d go ahead and
stick with when you’re trying to sweeten things up. Again, if you want to do no-sugar, though,
stevia is the way to go, and there’s a lot of all-natural products coming out that you’re
going to find at natural health food stores that actually contain stevia. This is a way
you want to go. So remember, action steps for the week, get
rid of all the artificial sweeteners. Get rid of the aspartame, get rid of the Sucralose,
switch over to stevia and the all-natural sweeteners. It may just save your life and
a friend. If you like this, think about the people you
know who are at work or at your church or the places you go to who are addicted to diet

  1. True, the human body can not completely process high fructose corn syrup; however it does get processed and eventually expelled from the body– unlike other synthetic sweeteners which decompose to become carcinogens– like Dr. Axe said.

  2. Those who are griping about this video are completely missing the point. It's not just about weight gain; it's the potential damage to cellular structure which can manifest itself not only by disease but coupled with a compromised immune system. Take any basic biology, chemistry or nutrition class, and learn a few things. It will not be any different than this video.

  3. great video man, i drink around 10 litres of pepsi max a week because my mom buys it thinking it keeps us kids happy and its perfectly healthy (like they say) and its easier to bring a 2 litre bottle of pepsi max into my room than a glass of water that i will have to keep getting up and re-filling, btw a friend who studys science told me that when you drink sweet things your body expects sugar, like chewing gum, so it craves it, causing binge eating to fill the gap is that true? thanks again.

  4. My favorite "Artificial" sweetener is Xylitol. I get xylitol lollipops from my local natural co-op. I hope Xylitol is okay. Stevia has a strange after taste I don't like.

    to lose weight and to get fit. And i know im in the right direction.
    I really believe that by doing this program first was my best
    option.It has really improved my fitness and im full of confidence

  6. The diet coke still messes with your blood sugar levels because the body can be tricked to secret more insulin, e.g, artificial sweetners will cause your mouth to create amalase, and your mouth gets all goey.

  10. This is sad. I don't know how we're still alive. I guess we're all dying slowly, because everything is bad for you. Fruits are covered with dangerous pesticides, meat is so full of bad hormones. The air and water is contaminated. Organic products and natural medicine is expensive. So what do we do? It's hard to grow your own veggies when u live in a big city in the middle of the desert. 🙁

  12. Yeah, unfortunately I've learned the hard way when it concerns aspartame. And I think sucralose has caused a problem I've been dealing with this past week and a half. What about Monk Fruit Extract? I drink the Skinny Cow coffees and noticed that's in there. Is that a safe one or is it a dangerous one?

    I hate I've learned all this stuff too late. I'm in my early 30s and I've been drinking this shit for years and I just feel like I'm at death's door. I'm thankful I never wanted kids because there's no telling what the kids would be born with since I feel like my body/system is in such god awful shape from the damage I've done to myself by consuming so much of this garbage.

  13. Aspartame can be found in Health Food Stores. Phenylalanine can be purchased from Health Food Stores. Aspartic Acid can as well. That's what Aspartame is. One health website lies and said this. It is banned by health-conscious countries all over the world, especially where there is a national healthcare system in place. Fact. It's not banned in any country. But read what this website said.

  15. Recently gave up drinking Coke Zero. I am very overweight and have switched over to being a Vegan. Never would have thought I would do that! So far, its great!
    My wife and I still like to use a small amount of Mio or Crystal Light Liquid in a litre of water. I know it is not great for me, but my thought it that it is such a small amount (1/2 tsp per litre of water) that it should not have much/any effect on me. Or am I just being delusional?

  16. I wish such information could go on to TV so more people could know. I had a colleague who had cancer and was told to cut down sugar but she turned to artificial sweetener, I saw her put sweetener into her tea all the time, told her sweetener is worse than sugar but she didn't believe it.

Having found this video on a different site where I also found a link to more "side effects" of consuming aspartame listed ADD as a side effect, which literally is an impossibility as it's something you're born with, it's a disorder not something you can develop via side effects or any other manner. So I can't help but to just write off this whole video as complete garbage and possibly Dr. Josh's own opinion instead of actual proven facts.

  19. sir plz tell me from 6 days i am taking whey protein which is high in sucralose now i am not able to sleep and have hair fall. does it mean i am sucralose sensitive

  20. sir i am using whey protein of ultimate nutrition and i have no problem with it but now i purchased new whey protein of myprotein campany after use of 6 days now i am not able to sleep and i have hairfall problem my hairfall increased as this protein is very sweet so sir plzz tell that should i have allery to sucralose and what should i do plzz help..

  24. Diet soda is worse than normal soda so normal soda would be healthier option between the 2 i only drink normal soda

  25. Dr. Josh Axe , I just bought (Gold Standard 100% whey protein, 73 scope). Unfortunately it contains SUCRALOSE. What I'm concerned about is my Gut health. I only consume 1 scope/day. Would it be ok if I use the powder and change the next time or should I get rid of it now?
    P.S I'm not following a healthy diet up till now

What about ditching sugar (table sugar and artificial sugar) replacing them with little bit honey occasionally and sweetening you baking with glucose instead (after your body adapts it will be plenty sweet) and it will not spike your insulin as much and your body can use it as fuel because your body works on glucose

  27. He just said that zero-calorie sweeteners cause weight gain and then proceeded to say that stevia won't cause weight gain because it has zero calories… Wtf?
